Hmong New Year preparations take place at Coppertop Church in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. — The local Twin Ports Hmong community is busy preparing for their annual New Year celebration.

The celebration takes place tomorrow, but today the focus was on preparing traditional food. Including lots of egg rolls, purple rice, vegetarian stir-fries and other dishes.

New Year is a time for family and friends to gather and for the Hmong community to share their culture with authentic clothing, music and dance.

Cher Pao Vang, a cook at the event, says he came to America in 1976. He says sharing your culture is very important.

“There aren’t many Hmong here. So, most people don’t know who the Hmong are. Right? So let’s share our culture with our friends here. That we are separate from this community,” Vang said.

Hmong New Year will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday at Coppertop Church with a program at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon. It’s free and everyone can participate.
